Password Security Made Simple

8 minute read Essential for everyone

The Password Problem

We all have too many passwords. Bank accounts, email, shopping sites, social media - it's impossible to remember unique passwords for everything. So most people do one of two things:

  1. Use the same password everywhere (dangerous!)
  2. Use simple passwords they can remember (also dangerous!)

The good news? There's a better way that's actually easier, and we'll show you how.

Why Password Security Matters

When hackers break into a website (which happens more often than you'd think), they steal everyone's passwords. If you use the same password on multiple sites, they can now access ALL your accounts.

This is how people lose money, get their identities stolen, or have their email accounts taken over.

The Solution: A Password Manager

A password manager is like a secure digital safe that:

You only need to remember ONE password - the one that unlocks your password manager.

Recommended password managers:

Setting Up Apple Keychain (iPhone Users)

If you have an iPhone or Mac, you already have a password manager built in!

1 Make sure it's turned on

On your iPhone:

2 Let it save passwords

When you log into a website or app, your iPhone will ask "Save Password?" - tap "Save Password" to store it securely.

3 Let it fill in passwords

Next time you visit that site, your iPhone will offer to fill in your password. Just tap the suggestion above the keyboard or use Face ID.

Creating Strong Passwords

When you create a new account, your password manager will suggest a strong password. Use it! It will look something like:

xK9#mP2$nQ7@wL4

You don't need to remember this - your password manager does that for you.

Your Master Password

The ONE password you need to remember is your master password (or your Apple/Google password). Make it strong but memorable.

Good technique: Use a passphrase

Instead of a random password, use a sentence you can remember:

MyDogRex-Loves2Swim!

This is easy to remember but very hard to guess. It has:

Good passwords:

  • Coffee-Makes-Me-Happy99
  • ILove2Watch$unsets!
  • MyGrandkids-Are-The-Best

Bad passwords:

  • password123
  • John1950 (name + birth year)
  • 123456789

Two-Factor Authentication (Extra Security)

Two-factor authentication (often called "2FA") is like having two locks on your door. Even if someone gets your password, they still can't get in without the second factor.

How it works:

  1. You enter your password
  2. The site sends a code to your phone via text message
  3. You enter the code
  4. Now you're in!

Turn this on for:

Keep your phone number secure

Since security codes often go to your phone, protect your phone number! Never give it to strangers, and contact your phone company to add a PIN to your account.
